Tom Livizos stands as a distinguished figure in American history, exemplifying courage, resilience, and a profound dedication to service. Born in 1926 in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, Tom grew up in New York City during the tumultuous Great Depression. The economic hardships shaped his character, instilling in him a strong work ethic and an enduring sense of perseverance.

 

On his 18th birthday in 1944, Tom Livizos made a decision to enlist in the U.S. Army amid the global conflict of World War II. He joined the esteemed 29th Infantry Division, a unit recognized for its valor during one of the most critical periods of the war. On June 6, 1944, Tom was part of the first wave of soldiers landing on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France, a crucial operation in the Allied effort to liberate Europe from Nazi control.

 

In the chaotic days following the invasion, Tom’s unit was engaged in intense combat when he was surrounded and captured by German forces. He was severely wounded and endured brutal treatment from the German forces, while imprisoned in a French convent converted to a hospital in Reims, France.

 

Despite the dire circumstances, Tom exhibited extraordinary resilience. Under the care of French nuns and with assistance from the French Underground Resistance, he orchestrated a daring escape from captivity.
